What will my insurance cover?

We recommend checking with your insurance plan before your visit to make sure the service you need is covered at Planned Parenthood, and to learn what visit costs (such as a co-pay or deductible) you might be responsible for.

Here’s how:

  1. Call the member service information number on the back of your insurance card.
  2. Tell your insurance what service you are seeking and that you will be visiting Planned Parenthood.
  3. Confirm your benefits and coverage and ask what your out-of-pocket costs will be. (We know health insurance can be confusing. Here’s a guide to what you need to know about co-pays, deductibles, formularies, and networks.)
  4. If the service you're seeking is not covered, you can still visit Planned Parenthood.  Click on Cash, Credit Card, and Payment Plans below for more information.
  5. If you find that services at Planned Parenthood are not covered, ask your insurance plan to add us as a participating health care provider so you can take full advantage of our convenient, high-quality, compassionate care.

Which insurance companies make it easy for me to get care at Planned Parenthood?

These PPO or POS plans make it easy for you to come to Planned Parenthood for care:

  • Aetna
  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield (out of state)
  • Blue Shield of California
  • Cigna
  • Health Net
  • Molina
  • Sharp Health Plan
  • TriCare Select
  • United Healthcare

If you have a HMO plan, you may need a referral. Please give us a call and we will help you determine whether that will be necessary.

If you don’t see your insurer’s name on this list, don’t panic. Just call them and ask how you can come to us for care.

This list was updated in April 2023. We do our best to keep this list up-to-date. To get the latest information about health care insurance coverage at Planned Parenthood, call 1.888.743.7526.

How can I keep my health care private when I am covered on my parent’s or spouse’s private health insurance?

If you have health insurance under another person’s health plan—like your parent or spouse—your health plan may send them information on where and when you access health care and what health care services or tests you receive.

If you want to keep it confidential, submit a Confidential Communications Request to your health plan. They will have to accept it, NO QUESTIONS asked if you:

• Get sensitive services like birth control, STD testing and treatment, abortion, or pregnancy tests

 OR

• Think you could be at risk if your private health information about any health care service was shared.

Prices for Common Services

Some things you should know when estimating the cost of your visit:

  • You may qualify for reduced prices on certain services based on your income; ask at the front desk when you check in.
  • The price you pay for many services, such as check-ups and office visits, will be based on the number of symptoms or conditions you have, and how many services you need once you see one of our medical providers.

Because of this, it is difficult to provide an exact price until you meet a provider and are screened for reduced pricing. But here’s some basic information about what your services might cost:

Looking for Insurance?

Health insurance options are available for people without insurance. These options cover care when you're sick, hospital costs, prescription drugs, and other services. Insurance may be low- or no-cost to you. And you can still come to Planned Parenthood!

Some people qualify for free or low-cost health insurance. You can see if you qualify for either Medi-Cal or Covered California financial assistance here.

You can enroll in Medi-Cal anytime. For Covered California plans, open enrollment is typically in the fall. In certain circumstances, you may enroll in Covered California before the next open enrollment period if you have a “qualifying event.”

If you want to continue to come to Planned Parenthood for routine care, like birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment, see which insurance plans allow you to come to us in the tabs above. Go to Covered California for a complete list of options available to you, or to enroll.
