Transgender Awareness Week (November 13-19) is a time to uplift the experiences and challenges faced by the transgender community. PPMM Storyteller Jess, shares his experience as a transgender man and how he's supporting the community.
When I was in my early twenties, on my own for the first time, I did not have insurance. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte in Fresno was a life saver for a young, sexually active person with a uterus.
In 2009, I was raped and hurt so badly that I got some bad infections. My initial check-up was through Planned Parenthood in Santa Cruz. The doctor took me seriously and helped me call law enforcement when I was traumatized.
In 2011, I came out as a transgender man, and once again PPMM Fresno was there to help! I started my transition with them and got my first HRT (hormone replacement therapy).
Now, as an activist for the transgender community, I help people get connected to these services via PPMM, particularly those where finances are a barrier to care. I literally would not be the man I am today if it wasn’t for PPMM!
