Global Programs

In partnership with organizations in low-and-middle income countries, our Global Programs support efforts to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes for young people.

Our Approach

We help build our partners’ capacity to deliver high-quality sexual and reproductive health services and sexuality education. We do this by providing grants and leveraging our expertise in sexual and reproductive health programming to provide technical assistance and capacity building support to projects working in sexuality education, youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, digital health interventions, and LGBTQ inclusivity. Partner organizations use these resources to implement programs in their communities which are responding to the needs of young people.

Our global work is grounded in our beliefs.

Justice & Health Equity

Great disparity exists in health outcomes within and between countries. Young people in low and middle income countries, particularly adolescent girls and young women, experience high rates of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unintended pregnancy.  Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-old girls globally. Sexuality education, increasing access to family planning services, and ensuring that those services are tailored to the needs of youth can help young people who choose to prevent pregnancy.

Evidenced Based Programming

We are a nationally recognized leader in sexual and reproductive health care, sexuality education, and advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood staff have hands-on experience in cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to high-quality service delivery, education, and training in the U.S. We work side-by-side with staff from our partner organizations to support their delivery of high-quality care.

Two-Way Learning Exchange

While working with our partner organizations to build their capacity, we learn through our partnerships.

Big Impact from Small Investments

In addition to building capacity, the earnings from our endowment allow us to make small grants to some of our global partners. Small grants can have a big impact. In 2020, we directly reached over 3,000 youth with sexuality education through our partner organizations in the Dominican Republic, the Marshall Islands, and Vietnam and the programs we support are growing every year.

Suzanne Cluett Fund

Since 2001, we have collaborated with 11 global health nonprofits in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to improve the sexual and reproductive health of local communities. In 2005, we received a generous gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in honor of Suzanne Cluett, a long-time Planned Parenthood supporter and advocate for reproductive health and rights. With this grant, we established a permanent endowment, “Suzanne’s Fund”, which has enabled long-term stability and committed engagement of our Global Programs.

Suzanne’s commitment to international sexual and reproductive health started in Nepal in the 1960s and led to her serving in leadership positions at PATH and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A Washington state local, Suzanne was an enthusiastic supporter of Planned Parenthood and believed that family planning and sexual and reproductive health care play a critical, lifesaving role in global health.
