I wanted to take a moment to talk about a very important anniversary that just passed: Roe v. Wade. On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court announced its decision that the constitutional right to privacy includes the right to abortion. Now, 49 years later, Roe v. Wade remains one of the most contentious rulings to date.

From the moment Roe was decided, misguided politicians have chipped away at the spirit of the law – placing hurdle after unpassable hurdle to burden folks away from their right.  Over 1,300 pieces of anti-abortion legislation have been implemented since Roe. 100 of those were in 2021 alone, marking the most abortion restrictions in a single year, ever. The depth of these laws is mind-boggling: forced waiting periods, mandatory counseling, medically unnecessary targeted regulation of abortion providers.

Like you, I believe that things need to change. Through all the cruel and callous policies, intentionally hurtful rhetoric, and in this all-hands-on-deck moment for abortion access, I have one message for you: you're the reason that this fight is not over. Today, and every day, Planned Parenthood is working to ensure that anyone who seeks abortion care gets one — work that simply wouldn't be possible without you.

This is one fight that is far from over. I’m glad you’re a part of it.

In solidarity,

Rebecca Gibron

Acting CEO
