Abortion is essential health care that is common, safe, and normal, yet we continue to see more legislative attacks on abortion and many other reproductive health care services.
The Supreme Court recently heard arguments on the case that could severely restrict mifepristone – one of two medications most used in medication abortion in the United States – nationwide. This case from anti-abortion activists should have been dismissed out of hand and never made it to the Supreme Court.
Mifepristone is safe, effective and has been used by millions of patients since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago. It has helped ensure that patients can make their own private medical decisions expanded access to reproductive health care – which is under dire threat in this country.
Working tirelessly against the stigma surrounding abortion, abortion providers are heroes. The staff and volunteers who make abortions possible are essential to the health and well-being of patients. We collectively are grateful for the doctors, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, and all health center staff who provide abortion care for Planned Parenthood patients.
We also know the emotional toll abortion bans have placed on our colleagues in Idaho, Indiana, and Kentucky in addition to those in our access states, who continue to provide care to patients, many of whom are navigating a more and more challenging landscape. We applaud each and every one of our fearless staff and supporters who continue to be advocates in the face of these senseless bans to ensure patients receive the care they need, when they need it.
At Planned Parenthood, we trust patients to make their own, fully informed sexual and reproductive health care decisions. And patients rely on our providers to provide their expertise and help them make those private medical decisions, free from shame or stigma.
Abortion providers are passionate, caring, skilled professionals who believe in the health, well-being, and dignity of the patients they see every day.
Regardless of the decision in the attack on mifepristone, people will still have access to safe and legal medication abortion at Planned Parenthood in states where abortion is protected. And, our patient navigators are here to help people in states where abortion is banned get the care they need with as few barriers as possible.
Planned Parenthood will never stop fighting to ensure people have bodily autonomy and access to all reproductive health care services, including abortion — no matter what.
