Medication Abortion Procedure

Please note: you will speak with a health care professional at your appointment about your medical information, all of your options, and you will be able to ask questions.

Information regarding your visit:

  • Your visit will last between 2-3 hours. Due to the length of the visit, we recommend that you do not bring children to the appointment.
  • You will receive the following services during your visit:
    • Vaginal ultrasound
    • Education session
    • First dose of medication to take at the clinic
    • Other medications to take while you’re in California, as directed
  • If with an ultrasound we cannot locate the pregnancy, we may need to perform additional testing to confirm the location of the pregnancy.
  • If it is determined that you are more than 11 weeks pregnant, we will have to reschedule you for an in-health center abortion.
  • You may have a light meal prior to your appointment.
  • Please take all regularly prescribed medication as you normally would before your appointment.
  • What to expect with this service:
    • Heavy bleeding, strong cramping and passing of large clots
    • This part of the process may last several days.  During this process, we advise that you have another person with you and you remain in California
    • It is our advice that you return to our health center for a follow-up visit which could happen as soon as 24-72 hours after your initial visit

We recommend that you plan to be off work at least 48 hours after taking the medication at home.
