Campaign for Abortion Access

On June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court revoked the constitutional right to abortion care. In the blink of an eye, millions of American women of childbearing age—and even more people who do not identify as women but can become pregnant—had less power to decide what happens in their own bodies than they did the day before.

The Campaign for Abortion Access is Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s ambitious effort to expand access to abortion for communities across San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties—and for those forced to travel from out of state to access the care they need and deserve. With your support, we will provide low- to no-cost abortion services for patients in financial need; hire and train the next generation of abortion providers; and expand our abortion navigation and patient travel programs to ensure patients can arrive safely at our health centers. And with the purchase of our Imperial Valley Health Center in El Centro, we will remain a haven for patients traveling from Arizona, Texas, and beyond.

Campaign Pillars

Purchase Imperial Valley Health Center

The Planned Parenthood Imperial Valley Health Center has provided patients with high-quality health care since 2015. The clinic has long been a lifeline for thousands of residents every year, and its strategic location an hour from the Arizona border has renewed significance in the post-Roe era.

Cost to purchase the Imperial Valley Health Center: $2.1M

More Providers, More Appointments

Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest provides approximately 18,500 abortions every year. In the coming year, we anticipate a minimum 10% increase in patients seeking abortion.

Cost to hire and train new abortion providers: $1M

The Abortion Access Fund

The Abortion Access Fund provides free or reduced-cost abortion services for thousands of patients each year. Before the fall of Roe, the Abortion Access Fund served a total of 300–350 abortion patients every month, dozens of whom traveled from out of state.

Cost to support the Abortion Access Fund for one year: $1M

The Patient Travel Fund

In addition to paying for their procedure, out-of-state abortion patients have the added burden of costs including travel, lodging, childcare expenses, and lost wages. Through the Patient Travel Fund, Planned Parenthood is able to provide practical support for patients most in need.

Cost to support the Patient Travel Fund, including the Rideshare Program, for one year: $200K

Patient-Centered Abortion Navigation

Planned Parenthood patients often have urgent needs beyond sexual and reproductive health care. Many have been a victim of assault or intimate partner violence. Some struggle with food insecurity, homelessness, or substance abuse. Others are in crisis and require immediate mental health support.

Cost to fund the Care Coordination program for one year: $500K

Amplify Message of Care and Access

Planned Parenthood has an obligation to ensure that patients know abortion is still safe, legal, and accessible in California, and that those seeking and providing abortion will be protected from civil liability imposed by other states.

Cost of Patient Reassurance Campaign for one year: $300K

Train the Next Generation of Providers

Abortion training provides future medical providers with procedural and counseling skills to care for the one in four women who will have abortions.

Cost to train a cohort of 60 medical residents over one year: $600K

Protect Abortion Access in California

It is critical that California remains a refuge for safe and legal abortion, that we continue to expand access, and that we set the national standard for equitable, compassionate sexual and reproductive health care for all.

Cost to fund Planned Parenthood’s advocacy work to expand abortion access in California: $250K
