LGBTQ+ communities have shown the power of resistance. The 1969 Stonewall Riots, which were led in part by transgender women of color and sparked the modern LGBTQ+ movement, demonstrated the change that can come from solidarity, protest, and pride.

Planned Parenthood honors the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities that continue to face unconscionable attacks on their bodily autonomy, access to health care, and humanity.

While LGBTQ+ communities have historically shown us the power of resistance, their ability to access health care, raise their families, and live their most authentic lives is under continued attack. The attacks are heightened for Black LGBTQ+ people who still face oppression and violence at the intersections of racism, homophobia, and transphobia — as we’ve seen in recent weeks as America mourns Black lives lost to police and racial violence.

The fights for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, and racial justice are linked. We’re proud to provide expert, compassionate sexual health care and education to all people — no matter who they are. This June, Planned Parenthood redoubles our commitment to building a world in which everyone can access basic human rights — including health care — and live free from violence or discrimination.

In honor of Tony McDade, a Black trans man who was killed by police, Nina Pop, a Black trans woman who was killed in May, and the countless Black trans women who have been killed, we invite you to join Planned Parenthood in supporting the calls to action from organizations tirelessly generating and maintaining efforts to combat police brutality and violence against transgender people — including but not limited to Center for Black Equity, Movement for Black Lives, and Sylvia Rivera Law Project

Our LGBTQ+ patients, supporters, and staff members come from all walks of life, and Planned Parenthood is proud to stand with them at the intersections of their identities.

We invite you to join us in standing with LGBTQ+ communities!

Here’s how you can participate virtually:

  • Since San Diego Pride is virtual this year, support San Diego Pride on July 18 by wearing any Pride swag and tagging @PPPSWHealth and @SanDiegoPride on social media on July 18.
  • Print a sign using one of the digital posters found here. These can be used to take pictures with or to decorate your home or your workspace.
  • Pride events in other regions are still being determined but we will continue to lift up and support our community partners.

Other ways to support Pride Month virtually:

  • Listen to the Center for Black Equity’s discussion: What does celebrating Pride Month look like at this moment?
  • Check out the PBS series, Prideland, a short-form digital series and new one-hour special. Follow queer actor Dyllón Burnside on a journey to discover how LGBTQ Americans are finding ways to live authentically and with pride in the modern South. Creating Change, the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy convening in the world (which PPFA has sponsored for the past few years), will be featured in an upcoming episode!

With you in Protest. With you in Pride.
