Abortion is a safe and legal way to end pregnancy.

There are two kinds of abortion in the U.S. — in-clinic abortion procedure and medication abortion

Abortions are very common. In fact, 1 in 4 women* in the U.S. have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old.

If you are pregnant, you have options. If you are trying to decide if abortion is the right choice for you, you probably have many things to think about. Learning the facts about abortion may help you in making your decision. You may also want to learn more about parenting and adoption.

Only you can decide what is best for you. But we are here to help. A staff member at our health centers can discuss abortion and all of your options with you and help you find the services you need.

Preparing for your Abortion Care Appointment:

  • Continue taking any regular prescription medication on the day of your appointment. If you have an inhaler for asthma, please bring it with you.
  • Do not use any street drugs or alcohol on the day of your appointment.
  • We recommend you make time to rest and recover after your appointment.
Medication Abortions (Abortion Pill)
  • PPHP offers medication abortion appointments at all 10 of our health center locations. You can make an appointment or walk-in.
  • For abortion pill services, plan to be at the health center about 1 hour.
  • The abortion pill process generally needs one to two days of recovery once the second medication is taken at home. We also recommend that patients have another adult available to support them during this time.
  • You can learn more about the abortion pill procedure here.
In-Clinic Abortion Procedure
  • In-clinic abortions are available by appointment only at our Smithtown and White Plains health centers.

  • For an in-clinic abortion procedure, plan to be at the health center 3 – 5 hours.
  • If you want, you can choose to be sedated with medicine to help you relax during your in-clinic abortion. If you choose to be sedated, we recommend that you have responsible companion with you to help you get home safely. If you are over 18 and do not have someone to drive you home, you may use a taxi service.
  • Recovery after an in-clinic procedure generally requires rest for the remainder of the day. Read more about after care for in-clinic procedures here.

*We use the word women here but understand that women aren’t the only people who seek abortion care.
