Dear Friends,

The Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) fiscal year 2020 annual report offers an overview of our work during twelve months of unprecedented challenges. Thanks to your generosity and support, we were able to respond rapidly and strategically to ever-evolving circumstances, and care for our patients—no matter what.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, PPLM and our partners boldly faced down persistent national attacks on our mission and on reproductive rights. Our strategic plan, Disrupting Disparities, Advancing Equity, leveraged our expertise as a provider, educator, and advocate to address the systemic racism, discriminatory laws, and stigma around sexual and reproductive health that create serious barriers to care, especially for people of color, young people, and people with low incomes. From our health centers and educational workshops to the State House, PPLM visibly and forcefully fought for and worked toward health equity and improved access in our communities.

This work continued even as the pandemic hit and challenged PPLM to innovate rapidly to ensure the safety of our staff so they could keep providing expert, compassionate care. Our health care providers delivered in-person care, with modified protocols to protect patients and staff. A quickly—yet expertly—launched telehealth program enabled us to seamlessly care for new and existing patients via video conferencing technology. Our educators pivoted to virtual modes of creative teaching and learning that proved to be highly effective and inclusive. The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF), PPLM’s political arm, mobilized hundreds of community volunteers to advocate virtually for programs and policies that support the health, well-being, and future of all people, including policies protecting the right to safe, legal abortion.

Looking back over the extraordinary events of 2020, so much has changed. Yet, our patients remain at the heart of all we do, and our organization is as focused and as strong as ever. As it has for generations, PPLM is empowering people to lead healthy and meaningful lives on their own terms.

Thanks to your unwavering help, we—and you—have so much to be proud of. PPLM’s innovations will continue until the pandemic recedes and well beyond. On behalf of PPLM’s patients, staff, and the communities we serve, thank you for your commitment, and thank you for standing with Planned Parenthood.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Childs-Roshak, MD
