I’m too old to have watched Hannah Montana, but at times I’ve found Miley Cyrus intriguing.  And my partner really loves the song Party in the USA. But yesterday, I thought Miley was especially cool.  In an interview with Out magazine Miley rejected the notion of choosing a gender identity, acknowledging that she doesn’t feel like any one box fits her.  She joins a growing list of celebrities (Laverne Cox, Bruce Jenner, Janet Mock) who are bringing the conversation of gender identity and expression into the mainstream and at Planned Parenthood we think this is a great conversation to have! (Read more about Miley and her charity foundation to benefit LGBT, homeless and at risk youth.)

Talking about issues with a human face reduces stigma and enhances understanding and acceptance. Planned Parenthood works every day to understand our patients and our communities in order to provide the highest quality, most compassionate, inclusive health care and education.  This commitment is driven by the exceptional leadership of a woman we consider our celebrity. Lillian Tamayo has been President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida for more than 15 years and has worked tirelessly to break down barriers, reduce health care disparities, and increase access to affordable reproductive health care for the entire community.  On Saturday, May 9 she will be an honoree at the Diversity Honors hosted by The Pride Center and The Harvey Milk Foundation for her work to promote inclusion and acceptance. We are so proud that our rock star is being recognized for her role in moving the conversation.
