A message from Grace Lin, COO, Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley
The March 16th shootings in Atlanta are the most recent and high-profile case of anti-Asian hate crimes. We’re deeply saddened by these horrifying events and our thoughts are with the Atlanta community. We will continue to condemn the hatred fueling the surge in violence against Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-Asian hate crimes have spiked by an alarming 150%. Sadly, the actual number of incidences are even higher: many crimes go unreported because of language and cultural barriers, a lack of trust in law enforcement, or a combination of those factors. As a Planned Parenthood affiliate that serves one of the highest percentages of patients identifying as AAPI and whose staff reflect the community we serve, we are deeply familiar with the fear, anger, sadness, and apprehension so many members of the AAPI community are experiencing now. Many of my own friends have revealed to me that this is the least safe they’ve felt in their lives.
At Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley, we believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, empathy and respect. My colleagues and I proudly live these values every day through the care and education we provide. We serve all individuals—regardless of background or circumstance, and that includes the AAPI community. We are committed to the safety of our patients and ensuring they can access care, now more than ever.
We are deeply committed to fighting injustice and stand firmly with the AAPI community to #StopAsianHate. Join us in showing up for the AAPI community.
- Help spread awareness and educate your family and community on the rise of violence against the AAPI community in our country.
- Check your own biases and reflect on how you may be contributing to microaggressions toward or harmful stereotypes about the AAPI community.
- Uplift and amplify Asian creators, artists, activists and Asian-led organizations.
It’s a privilege to be able to take an active role in Planned Parenthood’s mission. You as a supporter probably agree. But I am especially proud to be a part of Planned Parenthood Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley because we recognize what I have always known as someone who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley: that diversity is an integral part of our vibrant community.
