There’s nothing you should be afraid to ask, ashamed of, or embarrassed about when it comes to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). PPPSGV is here to talk about STI prevention, and provide testing and all necessary treatments.
For STI Awareness Month we’re here to answer some commonly asked questions about STIs! This is a non-judgment zone. With so much misinformation about STIs online, you can count on us to keep you informed.
Q: How do I know if I have an STI?
A: Most of the time, STIs have no symptoms. Testing is the only way to know for sure if you have an STI. Some people notice abnormal discharge (color and/or odor), pain while urinating, pelvic pain, bumps/sore on the genitals, and/or genital itching/irritation.
Q: Can I get rid of an STI?
A: Most STIs are curable, meaning you can completely get rid of the infection. Some STIs such a HIV and Herpes may not be curable, however, there is treatment available to help manage them.
Q: How often should I get tested for STIs?
A: We recommended getting tested before and after every new sexual partner.
Q: What do I do if I test positive for an STI?
A: What happens next will depend on the type of STI you have. The treatment might be pills by mouth, an injection, or even a medicated skin cream. You’ll also want to inform your sexual partner(s) so they know to get tested.
Remember that STIs don’t define you, so be sure to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Q: What can I do to avoid getting an STI?
A: Using condoms, getting tested regularly, and talking to your sexual partner(s) about their STI status are a few ways you can reduce the risk of getting an infection.
Q: Can I get an STI through oral sex?
A: Yes. We also offer testing (by throat swab) for infections that can be spread through oral sex.
Q: Can you have more than one STI at a time?
A: Yes, it is possible to have more than one STI at a time.
Q: Can you get an STI more than once?
A: Yes, you can get infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis more than once. Regular testing is crucial because even if you have been cured before, you can still get the same STI again.
Q: Where can I get tested?
A: You can get tested at your local Planned Parenthood! We offer low-to-no-cost confidential STI testing at all our health centers. We accept walk-ins at all our health centers or you can visit our website PPPSGV.ORG or call (626) 798-0706 to make an appointment.
