Abortion remains safe and legal in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Despite the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion is still legal in our three states. Our doors remain open and we continue to provide our full range of services, including abortion care.

While abortion is legal here, there are a few things you should know:

Maine

Abortion is legal throughout pregnancy in Maine.  Abortion after viability is permitted when approved by a physician. Viability means the stage of pregnancy when a fetus has developed enough that it is able to survive outside the uterus with medical help. When it happens depends on how the fetus is developing and can be different for every pregnancy.

New Hampshire

Abortion is legal with two restrictions: 1) a 24-week abortion ban with exceptions is in effect and 2) parental notification for minors is in effect. This means that if you are under the age of 18, the state requires that one of your parents be told of your decision 48 hours before your abortion. A judge can excuse you from this requirement.

Additionally, patients of all ages being seen for abortion services in the state of New Hampshire are required to provide a government issued photo ID.

Vermont

Abortion is legal with no restrictions.

Types of Abortion

There are two types of abortion: procedural abortion and the abortion pill.

PPNNE is now also offering Telehealth Visits for Abortion Pills for patients living in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont.

Abortion Funding

The Laura Fund at Planned Parenthood of Northern New England helps patients who have decided to end their pregnancies but cannot afford the procedure. If you need funding, please call our team at 802-821-4660 to learn what funding amount you are eligible for.
