PPGNY’s implementation of Epic is a milestone in aligning patient care across all 23 health centers and reflects a drastic investment in improving health outcomes in underserved communities.

New York – Planned Parenthood of Greater New York (PPGNY) is excited to announce that all 23 PPGNY health centers successfully transitioned to the new Epic electronic medical records (EMR) system. Epic enhances PPGNY’s ability to unify more than 300 health care providers, nurses, financial counselors, social workers, and other expert health care professionals into one centralized medical records and finance information system. Through the new EMR, PPGNY clinicians can easily access a patient’s medical history and needs, allowing the patient to seamlessly continue their health care journey at any PPGNY health center across 65% of New York State, further streamlining the patient experience.

PPGNY's EMR upgrade also outfits patients with the tools they need to take better control of their health. Epic’s secure patient portal, MyChart, allows patients to easily access test results, schedule appointments, connect with a provider through telehealth, message a clinician, pay bills, request prescription refills, and review visit summaries all from their phone or computer in one user-friendly platform.

The adoption of Epic is the culmination of a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment that involved integrating four independently operated EMRs into a singular, robust system. This is an incredible milestone in PPGNY’s strategic operational plan to align patient care across all 23 health centers following the merger of five legacy Planned Parenthood affiliates in January 2020.

Statement by Wendy Stark, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:

Epic is a drastic investment in enriching our patients’ experiences and pushing forward our mission to improve health outcomes in communities that face systemic barriers to sexual and reproductive health care. Epic’s state-of-the-art electronic medical record system and patient portal empower our patients with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures, along with the ability to access care without delay. Epic also offers providers a new and innovative way to collaborate with their patients and each other to effectively manage a person’s unique health care needs. Planned Parenthood of Greater New York envisions a world where everyone has high-quality, equitable accessible sexual and reproductive health care, when and where they need it. Upgrading our patient portal and electronic medical records system brings us closer to that vision.

Epic is used by more than 2,000 hospitals and 45,000 clinics, including most U.S. News & World Report’s top-ranked hospitals and medical schools. The majority of the U.S. population now has their medical records in an Epic system.
