As this case continues, mifepristone remains on the market and FDA-approved
NEW YORK, NY – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear oral arguments in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a case that challenges the FDA’s approval of mifepristone. Mifepristone has been FDA-approved for more than 23 years and is one of two medicines most commonly used in medication abortion in the United States. Availability of mifepristone is essential to ensure people have access to abortion care.
The Supreme Court will now consider the case in its current term. If the Supreme Court had not agreed to hear the case and the Fifth Circuit’s ruling had been allowed to stand, the decision would have imposed unnecessary restrictions on mifepristone, limiting access to medication abortion nationwide. As this case continues, mifepristone remains on the market and FDA-approved.
Statement from Wendy Stark, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:
We urge the Supreme Court to reverse the extreme decisions of the lower courts and honor evidence-based data that proves mifepristone is safe and effective. Reproductive freedom is core to living with dignity and autonomy, and everyone deserves to make their own decisions about their own health care and future. At Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to guarantee safe and equal access to all methods of abortion for everyone who walks through our doors. Abortion, including medication abortion, remains legal in New York and accessible at Planned Parenthood health centers.
