The mission of Planned Parenthood is:
to provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual;
to advocate public policies which guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services;
to provide educational programs which enhance understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality;
to promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care and encourage understanding of their inherent bioethical, behavioral, and social implications.
Providing Expert Health Care
Our expert nurses, doctors, educators, and health center staff are dedicated to bringing high-quality, affordable care to every member of their community. One in five women in the U.S. has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at least once in her life.
The heart of Planned Parenthood is in the neighborhoods we serve — the unique communities where we work and live. Our 49 distinct and locally run Planned Parenthood affiliates are the umbrella for more than 600 health centers nationwide; each reflects the diverse needs of their communities.
Our health centers provide a wide range of confidential, safe, expert health care. The majority of Planned Parenthood’s services are preventive: care that helps prevent unintended pregnancies with birth control and sex education, reduce the spread of STDs through testing and treatment, and screen for cervical, breast, and other cancers. Attentive physicians, nurse practitioners, and other staff take time to talk with you, so you’ll have an honest, supportive, non-judgmental space to ask questions and make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing.
Informing and Educating the Community
Planned Parenthood is a respected leader in sex education. We deliver sex education programs, resources, and tools that empower all people to make informed choices about sexuality and relationships, and lead their healthiest lives.
Planned Parenthood is proud of its vital role in providing people across the lifespan with sex education in classrooms, communities, and online to help promote sexual health and wellness. Planned Parenthood provides educational programs and outreach to 1.1 million people every year, and millions more online through digital sex education programs.
Planned Parenthood has 16 million activists, supporters, and donors working to protect access to health care and fundamental reproductive rights nationwide.
The Planned Parenthood Action Network empowers online activists in all 50 states to get involved with campaigns that advance reproductive health and women’s rights.
The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Strengthening our commitment to protect women’s health, educate young people, and expand access to reproductive health care, the Action Fund does educational and electoral work, including public education campaigns, grassroots organizing, and legislative advocacy.
Advancing Global Health
For too many people around the world, access to lifesaving reproductive and sexual health care and information is blocked — by poverty, a lack of medical staff providing basic services, politics, or war.
Planned Parenthood works with local partners in Africa and Latin America to overcome these barriers by increasing access to health care and education. We nurture local leadership, foster sustainable health and education programs, and fight for legal, social, and political improvements in communities around the world.
Planned Parenthood Global also advocates for safe policies that improve the sexual and reproductive health and well-being of individuals and families across the globe.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America is also a founding member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, based in London.
