Last night, President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to sit on the bench of the Supreme Court, after pledging solely to appoint judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade and dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

Just last year, Kavanaugh used his judicial power to attempt to prevent a young, undocumented woman in U.S. custody, Jane Doe, from accessing the safe, legal abortion she had asked for. Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC rallied in support of Jane, in coalition with the #JusticeForJane movement.

“President Trump and Majority Leader McConnell are trying to brand Kavanaugh as a moderate, and that simply is not the case,” Dr. Laura Meyers, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC said Tuesday. “We vehemently oppose this nomination, and call on the Senate to do the same. We can’t allow our daughters and granddaughters to have fewer rights than we do. Access to safe and legal abortion has been the law of the land for 40+ years and the right to control one’s body is an essential American liberty.”

Kavanaugh has attacked a myriad of other reproductive health care issues in addition to abortion, including birth control.

“As the local Planned Parenthood presence, we will be fighting back against this nomination from our city and region with everything we have,” Meyers said. “President Trump made his litmus test clear: He will only appoint biased justices who would “automatically” overturn Roe v. Wade, and strike down the Affordable Care Act. Kavanaugh meets that test.”
