Washington, D.C. – Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC issued the following statement regarding Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement effective July 31, after 30 years of service on the Supreme Court.

“This is a perilous time for reproductive rights in America,” Dr. Laura Meyers, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC, said. “Access to safe and legal abortion in this country is seriously threatened by a vacancy on the Supreme Court, as President Trump has pledged to appoint only anti-choice judges to lifetime appointments time and time again. Further, over the past 24 hours, anti-abortion groups and politicians across the country have not been shy about declaring this their chance to make it illegal to access abortion in this country. Trump and McConnell are very wrong if they think they will jam through an extremist appointee without Planned Parenthood putting up a fight.”
