Dear Friends,

This past year, with your help, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) was able to deftly embrace change while staying wholly focused on our mission to provide exceptional sexual and reproductive health services, educate our communities, conduct impactful research, and advocate for change – all in the face of a volatile national abortion access landscape and an increased demand for abortion in protective states, like Massachusetts. The loss of federal abortion protections was a stark reminder of the importance of our strategic health equity initiatives to expand abortion access; improve patient experience and care delivery through innovative technologies; reduce sexual health disparities, particularly in Black and Latino/a/x communities; and more.

As the use of mifepristone – an essential abortion and miscarriage treatment medication – continues to be threatened in a federal court case, we fought to safeguard and expand access in Massachusetts. We also leveraged partnerships with community-based organizations, health care providers, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and public colleges and universities to make medication abortion more accessible statewide.

Health center staff and patient navigators continued to lead in providing quality, compassionate, and non-judgmental care, support, and information to patients. Our team of expert trainers, community outreach specialists, and youth educators expanded formal training opportunities and went into their communities to facilitate conversations about sexual and reproductive health with friends, family, and members of the broader community.

In its first year, PPLM’s ASPIRE Center was awarded over $1 million in external funding to start an innovative training program to grow the sexual and reproductive health care workforce, expand PPLM’s renowned sex education program Get Real across the country, and conduct research that will study the impact of abortions bans and improve patient-centric care.

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) worked to elect more reproductive rights champions to the Massachusetts Legislature, who then increased funding for HIV prevention, abortion care, health care infrastructure, and training and development. They also protected patients and providers from hostile action by abortion opponents. PPAF lobbied, testified, and held conversations with lawmakers to urge them to make sex education in public schools inclusive and age-appropriate, reduce health care equities, and strengthen patient and provider protections.

Thanks to your generous support this past year, we have been able to quickly pivot into this post-Roe world, remain on the cutting edge of health care delivery and research, center equity in all aspects of our work, and take proactive action to defend against possible future attacks on our rights. This has allowed PPLM to continue to serve as a model of resilience and progress. Thank you for believing in PPLM’s mission to provide essential health care to all!
