Sexual and Reproductive Health Residency Program

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) is proud to offer the first-ever Sexual and Reproductive Health Residency Program for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.

PPLM's medical centers in Boston, Worcester, Marlborough, and Springfield offer a wide range of reproductive health care services, including contraceptive care, testing for sexually transmitted infections, gynecological exams, screening for breast and cervical cancer, gender-affirming care, colposcopy, LEEPs, and abortion. To ensure that these programs and services remain available to everyone in the state, PPLM advocates in the legislature and courts for the continued protection of the full range of reproductive health education and services.  

Program Description

This full-time 2-year residency program will provide a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) with the opportunity to build their clinical skills and knowledge to provide high-quality sexual and reproductive health care to diverse populations.    

The program will be comprised of hands-on clinical training (apprenticeship model), didactic, small-group interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and robust mentorship from senior leaders at PPLM. Residents will be expected to complete a Quality Improvement (QI) project and participate in ongoing research projects, with guidance and mentorship from the PPLM Director of QI and the PPLM Research Department. 

The program is highly adaptive and will provide flexibility to fully support the residents’ needs. At the program's end, graduates will be skilled sexual and reproductive healthcare providers, poised to develop a career path including leadership roles in sexual and reproductive health.

Clinical Activities 70% (3.5 days/week)

Didactic Sessions 10% (0.5 day/week) 

Research and Quality Improvement 20% (1 day/week)  

Year 1

The overall structure in Year One will be comprised of precepted clinical sessions with seasoned and dedicated preceptors (Worcester and/or Marlborough). Didactic sessions that will include one-on-one education designed to provide the fundamentals of SRH care, attendance at Grand Rounds and seminars offered by ASPIRE academic partners, and instruction in the basics of QI and research.

Clinical Activities: Precepted clinic and procedural training

Didactic Sessions: Selected clinical topics will be covered in adjunct with clinical training

Research and Quality Improvement: Participate in and familiarize with ongoing QI projects and research at PPLM

Year 2

In Year Two, residents will function independently and have an opportunity to practice in various locations, including Worcester, Boston, Springfield, Marlborough, and telehealth. They will also actively participate in didactic content development and share their experience with the first-year residents. 

Clinical Activities: Independent clinic practice

Didactic Sessions: Participate in didactic session development and presentations 

Including:

  • Reading and discussion
  • Interdisciplinary Grand Rounds and seminars
  • National conferences and networking opportunities

Research and Quality Improvement: Develop and implement own research and QI project

Questions?

Qualifications

Applicants must: 

  • Be a graduate of an accredited master’s or doctorate-level NP or PA program (within 24 months of graduation)
  • Be board certified by AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA and have their MA license prior to the program start date
  • Be CPR certified (BLS or ACLS)
  • Agree to complete a full-time 2-year residency
  • Have a desire to work as Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) in family planning and abortion services and have a personal commitment to the mission of Planned Parenthood.
