Is it safe to have unprotected sex while taking the inactive pills the first month you start taking birth control?
Your birth control pills continue to work even during the week you take the inactive (AKA “placebo” or “reminder”) pills. That’s the same week you get your period. So you’re equally protected from pregnancy throughout the month, as long as you take your pills as directed (one pill every day). But it’s still a good idea to use a condom during that week, and any week for that matter. Even though the pill is really good at preventing pregnancy on its own, condoms double down on the pregnancy prevention and protect you from STDs, too.
