Birth Control Consultation Preparation

Please note: During your appointment, you will speak with a health professional to discuss your medical information and your options. You will have the opportunity to ask questions. Birth Control Consultation: This is a non-exam appointment to get a prescription for birth control options like the pill, patch, ring, or shot. We can also test you for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. Reasons for a visit like this include:

  • Renewing a prescription for a birth control you are already on

  • Changing to a new kind of birth control

  • Getting emergency contraception

What to bring:

  • Your photo ID

  • Your health insurance information (if any)

  • Payment for your visit (if any)

  • Documents for Reproductive Health Access Fund (if needed)

Implant (Insertion/Exchange/Removal): The implant is a small matchstick sized birth control which is inserted into your arm. For your visit, make sure to wear a short sleeved shirt or a tank top. If you have scheduled to have the implant removed and you are looking to prevent pregnancy, we recommend that you do not have sex without a condom for 5 days prior to your appointment.

  • Payment for your visit (if any)

  • Documents for Reproductive Health Access Fund (if needed)

IUC/IUD (Insertion/Exchange/Removal): The IUC or IUD is a small “T” shaped device which is inserted into the uterus.

Insertion:

  • There must be no unprotected sex in the last 3 weeks (21 days) so that we can run an accurate pregnancy test before insertion. Abstinence, using hormonal birth control correctly and/or using a condom every single time is a requirement for an insertion.

  • Take 800mg of ibuprofen 1 hour before your appointment.  

Exchange:

  • Take 800mg of ibuprofen 1 hour before your appointment.

Removal:

  • If you are not seeking pregnancy, we recommend using condoms or abstaining for 5 days prior to your appointment.
