Statement by Kelly Nevins, Vice-Chair, Rhode Island Coalition for Reproductive Freedom:
“The Rhode Island Coalition for Reproductive Freedom (RICRF) salutes the incomparable leadership of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who fought tirelessly for equality and justice for all people. While we mourn her passing, we celebrate her impact on our nation.
“We thank Senator Jack Reed and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for their long-standing iron-clad defense of reproductive freedom and are counting on them to stand with us at a critical time in our nation's history. We cannot allow a lame-duck Congress to force the confirmation of a new Supreme Court Justice before the next election. RICRF calls upon Senators Reed and Whitehouse to do all in their power to prevent the confirmation of RBG's replacement before the next Presidential term begins in January 2021. To this end, RICRF is co-sponsoring a rally tomorrow, Sunday September 20, at 2pm at Burnside Park. We ask that others join us in signaling to our leaders that a rushed confirmation process is unacceptable.
“From the right of women to control their own bodies to the integrity of our elections to safeguarding civil rights and the environment, the next Justice must reflect the will of the people as expressed in the November election. Approving a new justice before the next election would be a disservice to RBG's memory."
