Anti-abortion rights lawmakers and their allies, unsatisfied with overturning Roe v. Wade, have strategically stacked the courts with judges hostile to abortion and reproductive health
New Haven, CT — The fight for autonomy over our bodies and health is facing unprecedented challenges as assaults on sexual and reproductive health surge across the nation. While the legal right to abortion remains protected in Connecticut and Rhode Island, the relentless pace of attacks in Congress and states across the country demands urgent attention as we strive to preserve and restore access to abortion for all people.
Statement from Amanda Skinner, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England
“Anti-abortion rights lawmakers and their allies, unsatisfied with overturning Roe v. Wade, have strategically stacked the courts with judges hostile to abortion and reproductive health. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court, having heard two abortion-related cases this term, stands at the crossroads of deciding the fate of reproductive rights. One case could limit access to mifepristone, a medication crucial to over half of all abortions in the U.S., while the other could deny pregnant individuals abortion care in emergencies, jeopardizing their health and lives.
As of today, 21 states have implemented bans on some or all abortions, leaving one in three women of reproductive age, along with numerous trans and nonbinary individuals, restricted from abortion access within their own states. Lawmakers opposed to sexual and reproductive health care are not only obstructing travel for necessary health care but also seeking to reverse the FDA's approval of safe and effective medication. Legislation with harmful implications for IVF is being promoted, and attempts are being made to censor public health information.
The stigma and policies that restrict people from accessing reproductive health care from skilled health care providers are dangerous. Planned Parenthood will continue to fight to ensure that abortion remains safe and legal in this country — because we believe deeply in the right of all people, no matter who they are, where they live, or what they earn, to make their own personal decisions about their bodies, their families, and their paths in life, without political interference. Together, we can create a world where reproductive freedom is a reality for all.”
