Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed around the world each October to raise awareness about breast cancer and emphasize on the importance of regular screenings. Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC), a leading expert in reproductive health, is proud to be part of the conversation and provide accessible breast health resources to the community.

Though typically associated with birth control or sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of services, including breast exams. In the previous year alone, we provided 7,627 breast exams to local patients.

In addition, we have dedicated Case Managers who provide support to patients who receive abnormal breast exam results. Receiving such news can be overwhelming and frightening, which is why our Case Managers assist patients in understanding and navigating next steps after abnormal breast exam results. This may include referring patients to free or low-cost diagnostic testing options, or assisting them in applying for MediCal’s Breast Cancer Treatment Program if they don’t have insurance. They can also connect patients with mental health resources and local support groups. Our Case Managers are available seven days a week to ease any uncertainty and answer any questions a patient may have.

Denise, a Case Manager at PPOSBC, brings more than a decade of experience working with breast cancer patients. Her unwavering dedication to supporting individuals in their healthcare journeys has taught her the immense importance of regular screenings. Denise urges those who notice anything unusual to promptly seek medical attention. In a recent case, she worked with a 31-year-old patient diagnosed with breast cancer—undeniably illustrating the importance of consistent breast exams are at every stage in life, even for those who believe they are too young to get breast cancer.

Denise vividly recalls working with a patient a few years ago who battled breast cancer. After conquering the disease through treatment, the patient revisited Planned Parenthood for additional reproductive health services. This serves as a poignant reminder of the comprehensive care provided by Planned Parenthood and the critical role it plays in supporting individuals through all aspects of their well-being. Denise expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to assist this patient during their time of need, and her happiness in witnessing their continued dedication to prioritizing their health.

“Knowing this patient was now cancer-free and coming back to Planned Parenthood for care was a full circle moment. I’m really grateful to have helped them in their time of need, and am happy to see they are continuing to prioritize their health.”
