Late last night, Monday May 2nd, Politico published a leaked copy of the Supreme Court draft opinion which showed their intentions to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion. We are disheartened by this decision, but we want to confirm that this opinion is a draft, not an official ruling. Abortion is still safe and legal in the United States.

What Does This All Mean?

If the Supreme Court officially rules to overturn Roe v. Wade, then the right to abortion would be determined by state legislatures. Half the states will essentially ban or restrict abortion, meaning 36 million Americans of reproductive age could lose access to safe and legal abortion.

The right to abortion is codified in California, so anyone has access to safe and legal abortion in the state. As a “reproductive freedom” state, this ruling will not impact your ability to obtain an abortion at Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC), or any abortion provider in California.

Planned Parenthood stands for care, and we are committed to providing reproductive care regardless of what state you live in. If you need services, call 714-922-4100 or visit our website to make an appointment.

What Can I Do?

We know that personal medical decisions about your sexual and reproductive health should be made by you, and you alone. Politicians and judges should never be making personal medical decisions for you — including the decision to have an abortion. Your freedom to control your body and your life is your own. Here are four things you can do today:

  1. Attend the Bans Off Abortion Rally
Make your voice heard at the Bans Off Abortion Rally at 10 am on May 14 at Centenial Regional Park in Santa Ana. For more information, to RSVP, or to volunteer, visit BansOffAbortion.org.
  2. Donate
We need your help now more than ever as we expect to see a profound increase in out-of-state patients seeking abortion. Ensure everyone - regardless of what state they live in or the ability to pay - has access to reproductive care. Donate today.
  3. Get Involved
Join our political arm, the Community Action Fund of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, and make sure California remains a reproductive freedom State and elect candidates that value access to affordable reproductive health services and comprehensive sexual health education. Visit CommunityActionFund.org for more information.
  4. Vote
Help keep California a reproductive freedom state by ensuring we elect officials at all levels of government that support access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion. Learn more at March2thePolls.org.
