Late last night, Monday May 2nd, Politico published a leaked copy of the Supreme Court draft opinion which showed their intentions to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion. We are disheartened by this decision, but we want to confirm that this opinion is a draft, not an official ruling. Abortion is still safe and legal in the United States.
What Does This All Mean?
If the Supreme Court officially rules to overturn Roe v. Wade, then the right to abortion would be determined by state legislatures. Half the states will essentially ban or restrict abortion, meaning 36 million Americans of reproductive age could lose access to safe and legal abortion.
The right to abortion is codified in California, so anyone has access to safe and legal abortion in the state. As a “reproductive freedom” state, this ruling will not impact your ability to obtain an abortion at Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC), or any abortion provider in California.
Planned Parenthood stands for care, and we are committed to providing reproductive care regardless of what state you live in. If you need services, call 714-922-4100 or visit our website to make an appointment.
What Can I Do?
We know that personal medical decisions about your sexual and reproductive health should be made by you, and you alone.
