President & CEO Message

Dear Friends,

As we come to the end of 2022, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your support throughout this year. Because of you, we had another successful year providing care, no matter what.

This year, we entered a new era in the fight for reproductive rights with the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Nevertheless, our team has never been more dedicated to providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services and educating young people with age-appropriate, medically accurate information. In this critical time for reproductive health care, we have found comradery, momentum, and hope for brighter days ahead.

With your support, we’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way next year. We are grateful for your end-of-year donations so we may continue to work together in 2023.

Thank you for your continued support of PPHP. We could not do this work without you. To get the latest information, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to learn what is happening at PPHP and issues related to sexual and reproductive health care. Please share our posts so your friends and family can get involved in 2023 as well.

In this together,

Vincent Russell
President & CEO

World AIDS Day and Health Care Services

On December 1, we marked World AIDS Day, a global day of recognition for the more than 38 million people living with HIV/AIDS. We commemorate the lives of those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses, and recommit to ending the HIV epidemic and achieving health equity.

HIV/AIDS affects people around the globe, including in the U.S. Of the approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. living with HIV today, about 1 in 7 are unaware. Testing, preventative medicine, and education are all critical tools to ensure more people can take charge of their health.

At PPHP, we are committed to making HIV prevention and treatment options accessible to everyone. We offer HIV testing at all of our 10 health centers without an appointment, with results available while you wait. Our health care providers are also here to help determine if you may be a candidate for PEP or PrEP. Members of our education and training team also offer age-appropriate workshops on HIV/AIDS and safer sex practices.

Curious about HIV? Make an appointment at a PPHP health center today to discuss testing with a provider. We are here to support you every step of the way.

To learn more about these services, visit HIV Testing | Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic, Inc. or call 800-230-PLAN.

Education Team Finishes Strong Year of Programs

Our Education and Training team delivered a total of 440 sex education programs and attended 38 outreach events, reaching 6,214 people this year to date. Our team also reached a total of 1,294 individuals through 22 education and outreach programs in Spanish.

The Promotores Program in Suffolk County, a peer health education for Latinx adults, successfully graduated their full cohort of 5 students on November 28. The graduates are now Reproductive Health Peer Educators and will begin to attend, plan, and co-facilitate within the Latinx community in Suffolk County. Our Promotores Program Coordinator is excited to support the new Peer Educators in all the work they will do in 2023.

In Suffolk County, our Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) team’s new partnerships with HELP Suffolk and the Outreach Project have flourished!  We have completed a cycle of Be Proud Be Responsible, our evidence-based program with a group of boys in the Outreach Project’s residential facility. The organization is so pleased with how it is going they asked us to plan a cycle in the new year with their BOCES High School Equivalency program through Brennan High School.

We are experiencing similar success with HELP Suffolk, as we have a youth program and parent program running simultaneously. The parents have expressed that the information is invaluable not only for themselves but also for their young people. We plan to expand our programming to include adults who are not yet parents, or who need a little sex ed brush up for themselves!

In an effort to strengthen our outreach in Putnam County, our team is deepening our connections through coalitions, and we’re actively attending the Putnam School Board Coalition and the Communities that Care Coalition. Our team’s goal is to serve all four of our counties with equity regardless of challenges, and we look forward to the new partners we’ll gain over the next months.

Start 2023 With Two Exciting Events

We’re excited to bring you two important events in January to kick off our advocacy in the new year.

Join us virtually on Tuesday, January 10 for Rise Up for Repro Rights to celebrate the New York Reproductive Health Act and recognize the work to be done to protect and expand abortion access. We'll come together to hear dynamic guest speakers, listen to local artists, and be in community as we build a better future for sexual and reproductive health care.

We have a limited number of Party in a Boxes, which include themed drinkware, snacks, and PPHP swag. Register to get yours before they’re all gone! Complimentary tickets are also available.

Registration and more information are available here.

Then, join us in Albany on Tuesday, January 24 for our annual Day of Action. Meet with state legislators about the reproductive rights issues that are important to you.

New York has lots of work to do in the State Budget and Legislative Session to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care, education, and more. Activists like you are essential to reminding our legislators what is at stake if we don’t advance our legislative priorities.

We will provide bus transportation to and from the State Capitol in Albany as well as breakfast and lunch. Trainings will also be offered so everyone is prepared to lobby on our important issues.

Please register here by January 10, 2023 and share this exciting opportunity with your friends and fellow activists.
