What is HPV?

HPV is a virus transmitted through skin-to-skin and sexual contact.  Experts believe nearly all sexually active adults have been infected with HPV, and many people have been infected multiple times. While most infections are naturally cleared by the body, sometimes the virus can persist for years and cause certain types of cancer or genital warts. (Palefsky, 2021).

Why is HPV vaccination important? 

Each year 36,500 people are diagnosed with HPV-related cancer, these cancers include cervical, throat, anal, penile, vulvar, and vaginal cancer. It is estimated that the HPV vaccine could prevent 33,700 cancers cases each year (CDC, 2021a).

Who should get vaccinated? 

The HPV vaccine is recommended for everyone age 9 through 26. It is also available for anyone 27-45 years of age. If you have already been diagnosed with HPV it is still recommended that you get the HPV vaccine as there are multiple variants of the virus that you can still protect yourself against. (Meites et al., 2019)

How do I know the HPV vaccine is safe? 

Gardasil 9 has been approved for 9 years after large clinical trials found it to be both safe and effective. The CDC continues to monitor vaccine safety and reported side effects of all approved vaccines, and has been studying HPV vaccines for over 15 years. With over 135 million doses given, the data continues to show that the HPV vaccine is safe and effective. The HPV vaccine does not affect fertility. . (CDC, 2021b)

Why do I need the HPV vaccine? Isn’t it for kids? 

A: The HPV vaccine is typically recommended for pre-teens. But if you didn’t get it when you were younger, you need to get it now, so you’re protected against the HPV infections that cause cancer and genital warts. The sooner you get it, the better it protects you against HPV-related problems. That’s why you need to start the shot series today.  

Why do men need the HPV vaccine? 

A: HPV can cause cancer and genital warts in men. While HPV infections usually go away on their own, infections that don’t go away can lead to genital warts and many types of cancer, including penile cancer, anal cancer, and throat cancer. Most men who get HPV never develop symptoms, and there’s no test for HPV in men. So, it’s very important that you get the HPV vaccine today to protect your health. 

I’ve already had HPV. Do I still need the vaccine? 

A: Yes. The current vaccine protects against 9 types of HPV, including the types that cause most HPV cancers. So even if you’ve been infected with 1 type of HPV, the HPV vaccine can still protect you against other cancer-causing types. That’s why it’s important you get the vaccine today. 

How many shots do I need? 

A: It depends on whether you’ve had any shots, or doses, of the HPV vaccine before — and how old you were when you got those doses. Please talk to your provider today about starting or continuing your HPV vaccination. 

 If you have  not received any doses: If you  haven’t had any doses of the HPV vaccine yet, you’ll need 3 total shots over several . You can get started today. 

Does the HPV vaccine have any side effects? 

A: The HPV vaccine is very safe. Like any medicine, vaccines can cause side effects, including pain, swelling, or redness where you get the shot. Those side effects are normal, and they should go away in a day or 2.  

How do I pay for the HPV vaccine and how much does it cost?  

A:In Washington State all health insurance plans will cover HPV vaccination up to age 45. If you do not have insurance and/or are not a US citizen, talk to the front desk to see if you qualify for a free vaccination based off your income and household size.

¿Por qué necesito la vacuna contra el VPH? ¿No es para niños? 

R: La vacuna contra el VPH generalmente se recomienda para preadolescentes. Pero si no la recibió cuando era más joven, debe obtenerlo ahora, para que esté protegido contra las infecciones por el VPH que causan cáncer y verrugas genitales. Cuanto antes lo reciba, mejor lo protegerá contra los problemas relacionados con el VPH. Es por eso que necesita comenzar la serie de vacunas a  hoy.  

¿Por qué los hombres necesitan la vacuna contra el VPH? 

R: El VPH puede causar cáncer y verrugas genitales en los hombres. Si bien las infecciones por VPH generalmente desaparecen por sí solas, las infecciones que no desaparecen pueden provocar verrugas genitales y muchos tipos de cáncer, incluido el cáncer de pene, el cáncer anal y el cáncer de garganta. La mayoría de los hombres que contraen el VPH nunca desarrollan síntomas, y no hay una prueba para el VPH en los hombres. Por lo tanto, es muy importante que reciba la vacuna contra el VPH hoy para proteger su salud.
