How effective are EContra EZ and other OTC levonorgestrel morning-after pills?*

An OTC levonorgestrel morning-after pill – like EContra – can lower your chance of unintended pregnancy by 75-89% if you take it within three days after unprotected sex. But sooner is better – the longer you wait, the less effective it is.

*This type of EC is less effective in people who weigh over 155 lbs. In this case, Ella or the copper IUD, which work up to five days after unprotected sex, might be better EC options for you.

It’s smart to use a condom every time you have sex.

When used correctly and consistently, condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy.

Condoms keep you safe by helping to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during vaginal, anal or oral sex. Condoms are also a type of birth control that can help prevent pregnancy, and can be used with other birth control methods.
