I’m currently taking the NUVA RING as my birth control. I just recently developed a yeast infection and was wondering if it was bad to take yeast infection cream and insert it up into my vagina if i am on the ring. Help!!
If you’re using a birth control ring, don’t use oil-based yeast infection creams. This is because oil-based yeast infection creams, like miconazole suppositories, may cause your estrogen levels to go up. Higher estrogen levels can raise your chances of blood clots, which can potentially be dangerous. Yeast infection creams won’t make your birth control less effective.
You can always talk with a nurse or doctor, like the ones at your nearest Planned Parenthood health center, about how to treat a yeast infection if you’re using the ring. They may prescribe you a pill to take by mouth or a water-based cream. A pharmacist can also help you figure out if an over-the- counter (OTC) yeast infection medicine is water or oil-based if the packaging isn’t clear.
And by the way, if you're wondering if the nuvaring can cause a yeast infection, good news, it doesn't!
