Planned Parenthood Social Media Page Guidelines

Our pages are intended to be a welcoming and safe space for Planned Parenthood supporters and anyone else interested in discussing sexual and reproductive health care and related news. Our pages are not debate pages, and we make every effort to maintain a safe environment for new and existing supporters.

We sometimes receive questions about how we manage our pages, including our decisions to ban users or hide comments. Below is clarification of our policies. While we adhere to these guidelines as closely as possible, occasionally we must use our discretion.

We may hide or remove comments that:

  • promote unintentionally misleading health information

  • reveal personally identifying information such as phone numbers and emails

  • reveal personal health information

  • reveal personal information about staff or clinicians

  • attempt to start debates about political candidates and elections

We may ban users who post:

  • Abusive or threatening writing or images that expresses prejudice against a particular group or individual, especially on the basis of race, religion, nationality, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, or ability

  • spam

  • purposefully false propaganda

  • false and/or deliberately misleading health information

  • violent anti-choice images and words

  • threats of violence, which will also be reported

As well as:

  • people who put down or personally attack others

  • people who consistently post inflammatory rhetoric

  • people who deliberately spam us with off-topic posts, because it makes the page unmanageable

Other acknowledgements

We receive hundreds of comments and messages across our social channels, so we aren’t able to respond to every one. But we thank our supporters for their patience and vigilance in maintaining this safe environment by reporting posts and individual users to the social media platform’s internal system as they see them.

Banned users are still welcome to visit our public pages and read the information and conversations but will no longer be able to publish to interact with our posts. Banned users are also welcome to interact with Planned Parenthood respectfully via other social presences where they are not banned, through digital tools, and in health centers.

While we acknowledge that some users may want to use strong language to discuss topics they strongly support or dislike, individual attacks on other users will not be tolerated.  If someone is attacking you via personal message, we recommend that you report the person directly to Facebook or law enforcement if they have threatened you or made you feel unsafe.

Comments and posts on this page may be archived or used in Planned Parenthood promotional materials or other social media posts.

*Social media pages are managed by Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that doesn't endorse candidates or otherwise intervene in elections, so we also don't discuss them on this page. If you want to learn more about the work of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a separate 501(c)(4) organization, formed as the advocacy and political arm of PPFA, please visit www.plannedparenthoodaction.org.
