Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Testing Privacy Questions and Feedback

What are chlamydia and gonorrhea?

Chlamydia (cla-MI-dee-a) and gonorrhea (gon-o-RHEE-a) are infections you can get in your vagina, penis, anus or throat. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are two of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Do chlamydia and gonorrhea cause signs and symptoms?

Not always. Many people with chlamydia and/or gonorrhea don’t have any signs or symptoms.

If you have symptoms, they may include:

- Pain or burning when you urinate (pee)

- Fluid from your vagina, penis or anus that smells bad or looks strange

- Bleeding from your vagina during or after sex

- Pain or tingling in your penis

- Pain in your lower belly or back, especially when having sex (if you have a vagina)

- Pain and/or swelling in your testicles

- A fever

If you have any of these symptoms, visit a Planned Parenthood health center.  At our health centers we can discuss your symptoms with you, give you a physical examination and recommend the right tests and treatment.

Are chlamydia and gonorrhea serious?

They are easy to treat but they can become serious if not treated. If you don’t get treated:

- You may give chlamydia or gonorrhea to people you have sex with.

- You may get other STDs more easily, like HIV.

- You may not be able to get pregnant anymore because chlamydia and gonorrhea can harm your tubes (women).

- You may give chlamydia or gonorrhea to your baby during birth (women).

How do I get chlamydia or gonorrhea?

You get chlamydia or gonorrhea from having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has chlamydia or gonorrhea. Getting tested is the only way to find out if you have them.

When should you test for chlamydia and gonorrhea?

There are many times when it’s a good idea to get tested:

- If you're in a new relationship.

- If you’ve had sex without a condom.

- If you or your partner have other sex partners.

- If you're a sexually active woman under 26.

- If you’re a man who has sex with men.

- If you have HIV (you’re HIV ‘positive’)

It takes about 2 weeks for a test to turn positive after you get chlamydia or gonorrhea. If you take a test before 2 weeks the test may not find chlamydia or gonorrhea even though you have them.

No tests are perfect. There’s always a chance that your test result can be wrong.

Is this the same test I would get at a health center?

Yes. This is the same urine test for chlamydia and gonorrhea in your vagina or penis you would get in some of our health centers. Some of our health centers - but not all - use vaginal swabs to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea in women.

If you visit a health center you may be offered a test for chlamydia and gonorrhea in your anus or throat. If you visit a health center you may also be offered tests for other STDs.

Does the test pack arrive in the mail?

What does it look like when it arrives in the mail?

Do I need to sign for my test pack?

What do I do with the test pack?

How do I get my test results?

It depends upon the mail, but in general you should have your test results within 3-4 business days of mailing your urine sample to our laboratory.

What happens if the test shows I have chlamydia or gonorrhea?

If the test shows you have chlamydia, we can write a prescription for the medicine you need. To make sure that it’s safe to give you the medicine we need you to answer a few short health questions in the app. You can then collect and pay for the medicine at your local pharmacy. The medicine for chlamydia is an antibiotic pill.

If your test shows you have gonorrhea you’ll need to visit a Planned Parenthood health center for an antibiotic shot.
