if i already have depression will the mirena make it worse?

Hormonal methods of birth control, like the pill, patch, ring, implant, or hormonal IUDs like Mirena can have an effect on some people’s mood while using them and therefore may be difficult for some people who suffer from depression. But unfortunately there’s no way to know if any particular method will affect your mood or not until you try it, and just because (for example) the pill changes your mood, doesn’t necessarily mean the ring or the IUD will. Most of the time those negative emotional side effects go away after the first few months of using that method, and they stop completely when you stop using the method.

Hormonal birth control can also have an effect on certain antidepressant medications. When you make your appointment to get on birth control, be sure to tell the doctor or nurse about any medication you take.

If you’re thinking about getting an IUD but are not keen on taking hormones, the Paragard IUD is an option that doesn’t have any hormones at all.
