I've heard that period tracking apps can make your personal information public and/or sell it to others if they want to. Is that true?

This is a super important question. At Planned Parenthood, patient and user privacy and security is our top priority, and we’re happy to let you know that we never sell user data and have no plans to do so in the future.
The Spot On period tracker is a product of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). PPFA isn’t a health care provider, and we don’t share this data with Planned Parenthood affiliate health care providers. Additionally, Spot On doesn’t share data with other health providers, health plans, or clearing houses, so it’s not subject to HIPAA laws.
Spot On is based on the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s medical standards and guidelines, and as a non-profit focused on making sure every person has access to the sexual and reproductive health resources they need, we've also made the app free for all users.
We do give the option to allow users to anonymize their data, which is used to gather insights to improve the app and learn how we can be most impactful. This is only shared within the PPFA Spot On team, or specific third-party platforms (like an analytics service), which have been vetted by our best-in-class Information Security Team.
If you choose to create a Spot On account, it will be secured and monitored with the highest standards.
Now that we’ve put your mind at ease when it comes to confidentiality, want to track your period and keep track of your birth control, too? Download Spot On.
