If you've already had sex, can you become abstinent?

Yes. Anyone can choose to be abstinent at any time. Even if you’ve had sex before, are in a relationship, or have never had sex. Choosing abstinence means not having sex for a period of time that feels right for you. You can choose how long or how short you want to be abstinent.
Many people decide to stop having sex and instead do other things for intimacy like kissing, dry humping, massage, or masturbation. This is also known as outercourse. Learn more about abstinence and outercourse.
