New York, NY — Today, Planned Parenthood commemorates National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, which, for 26 years, has honored the life of Dr. David Gunn — who was murdered  by an anti-abortion extremist on March 10, 1993. We recognize the tireless work of providers and staff who provide abortion care and support to patients every day.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America

“Abortion providers are extraordinary in every way. They are as compassionate as they are dedicated — exhibiting the will to both care for and fight for patients from every walk of life. In their work, they see each and every person for who they are, listen to and trust a person’s decisions about the future they want for themselves, and are a staunch source of support, no matter what.

“This National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers takes on renewed meaning amid existing and looming threats to abortion access. If the Supreme Court decides to unravel or overturn Roe v. Wade this summer, politicians in 26 states could move to eliminate the ability of abortion providers to deliver these essential health care services. Already, many providers must contend with myriad unnecessary restrictions that insult their expertise and place barriers to the essential care they provide.

“We know that abortion providers and staff have always displayed tenacity through the untenable. We continue to take inspiration from the brave people who show up for patients each day and stand up for their ability to access care, no matter who they are, where they live, or how much they have. Planned Parenthood will never stop working toward a day when abortion providers and staff across the country can provide safe and high-quality care to patients, free of stigma, threats, shame, and political interference.

“To each and every person who helps provide abortion services and care, I join the entire Planned Parenthood community in saying thank you, today and every day.”
