WASHINGTON — Today, the Biden administration released an interim final rule that—for the first time—will allow the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide veterans and their eligible dependents abortion care in cases of rape or incest or in cases where the pregnancy would threaten the life or health of the pregnant person.

This rule will also allow VA clinics to provide comprehensive information on pregnant people’s options regarding their pregnancies. Additionally, people covered under Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) will also be able to access abortion care in certain situations. This rule will go into effect immediately once it is published in the Federal Register.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“The abortion access crisis is here and it is real. Our veterans have put their lives on the line for this country and should at the very least be able to make decisions about their own bodies. This is an important step towards treating our veterans with the respect and dignity they deserve. We applaud President Biden and Secretary McDonough for taking this crucial step and the Biden administration’s continued effort to respond with a whole-of-government approach to this crisis. We all know the fight does not end here. Planned Parenthood remains committed to advocating for policies that help everyone access the full scope of reproductive health care that they deserve.”
