WASHINGTON — Today, Planned Parenthood Federation of America announced that Héctor Sánchez Barba will serve as the chair for the board of directors of Planned Parenthood Global, the international arm of the organization.

A leading advocate for the empowerment of Latinos nationally as well as a prominent figure on immigrant rights and Latino political power, Héctor Sánchez Barba is the CEO and executive director of Mi Familia Vota and the chair emeritus of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda. In these roles, he is an indefatigable voice advancing policy priorities, civic participation and fighting systemic injustices against Latinos, immigrants and the most vulnerable communities.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

I am delighted that Héctor will be leading Planned Parenthood Global’s board of directors in our 50th year of service to the global movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights. Throughout his career, Héctor has committed himself to mission-driven work — both on behalf of his own Latino community and in service of other communities through critical cross-movement work. We are lucky to have him be a part of Planned Parenthood, especially at this critical juncture in the fight for sexual and reproductive health care.

Statement from Dawn Laguens, interim executive director, Planned Parenthood Global:

For more than 50 years, Planned Parenthood has been standing alongside the brave providers and advocates on the front lines of sexual and reproductive health and rights. And today, we are excited to welcome one of these brave activists to lead our board of directors during this critical period as our global partners continue their lifesaving work amidst the global pandemic. Héctor has a track record as a visionary and a doer, qualities that mirror our Planned Parenthood Global staff and partners. We are thrilled to have Hector in this leadership role.

Statement from Héctor Sánchez Barba, chair, Planned Parenthood Global board of directors:

I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood, here in the U.S. and around the world. Through health centers, programs in schools and communities, and online resources, Planned Parenthood is a trusted source of reliable education and information that allows people to make informed health decisions. We do all this because we care passionately about helping people lead healthier lives. For 50 years, Planned Parenthood Global has supported access to sexual and reproductive health care and advocated for reproductive rights around the world. In partnership with nearly 100 organizations across nine focus countries in Africa and Latin America, we advance the health and rights of young people, women and families, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable and underserved. Each year, our partners provide sexual and reproductive health information and services to nearly 2 million people. Our unique sustainability model sets us apart, as we empower partners to stand on their own. We help grassroots organizations develop solid reproductive health programs, identify other sources of funding, build their communications and advocacy skills, and develop strategic plans.
