New Digital Tool Provides Personalized Information on How to Navigate State Restrictions

NEW YORK, NY — Today Planned Parenthood announced its new abortion access tool, the Abortion Care Finder, which provides people seeking an abortion with information about their options, any state requirements, and the nearest Planned Parenthood health centers where they can access a safe, legal abortion. Available on mobile and desktop, the tool responds to mounting state restrictions on abortion by connecting anyone who has decided to seek an abortion to personalized, easy-to-understand information and resources that can help them decide where to go and find the most accessible care — based on their location, age, and how far along they are in their pregnancy.

Statement from  Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president and CEO at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

Across the country, the Trump administration and other politicians are attempting to create a reality in which safe and legal abortion services are out of reach. At Planned Parenthood, we’re not only committed to providing high-quality health care — including safe, legal abortion — we’re doing whatever it takes to help people access that care. The Abortion Care Finder uses technology to help put agency back in the hands of our patients. As politicians are increasingly trying to keep people from accessing care or even information related to their sexual and reproductive health, it’s our duty to ensure people can still access health care and accurate, trustworthy information — no matter what.”

Statement from Ambreen Molitor, senior director of the Digital Products Lab at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“Like all of Planned Parenthood’s digital tools, the Abortion Care Finder was built by listening to the people we serve and evaluating how visitors use our website, so we can get people the information they want and need to make their own health care decisions as clearly and easily as possible. Planned Parenthood is continually looking for new ways to reach people with critical care and information, and we’re proud to be a leader in using technology and innovation to help people access safe, legal abortion.”

The unfortunate reality is that too many people in the U.S. face barriers to sexual and reproductive health care — including safe, legal abortion. Just this year, politicians have passed 26 abortion bans in 12 different states. Six states currently have only one health center that provides abortion. Many people already have to cross state lines or wait longer to access reproductive health care, including safe and legal abortion. The Abortion Care Finder helps people navigate state laws restricting access to abortion — including mandatory waiting periods, gestational limits, and parental notification and/or consent laws — and shows how these medically unnecessary rules personally and specifically impact them.

One of the most-searched phrases on PlannedParenthood.org related to abortion is “abortion near me.” With the Abortion Care Finder, people can input their age, zip code, and the first day of their last period into the tool, and receive information about their abortion options, any state requirements that could mean they’ll need to make two trips to a health center and/or have parental notification or consent, and how to make an appointment at a health center. The tool was created in response to the many people visiting Planned Parenthood’s websites looking for information on how to get an abortion, including which method of abortion — in-clinic or medication — is an option for them and what state restrictions may impact their access.

The Abortion Care Finder is the latest addition to Planned Parenthood’s set of robust digital tools that are revolutionizing the way people access sexual and reproductive health care and information. Planned Parenthood is committed to reaching people wherever they are — whether that’s online, on their phones, or in a health center — with the care and information they need. As a trusted, expert health care provider, Planned Parenthood knows that their patients rely on them to provide safe, legal abortion in a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment. Planned Parenthood is committed to providing people with accurate information, support, and access to care, if and when they make the decision to have an abortion.
