Nothing is going to slow us down – not even a pandemic.

Our organization quickly shifted from in-person events to remote meetings and webinars to engage and support our community. The ability to be nimble has been critical in keeping our community updated on state and national developments.

“COVID-19 has been used by opportunistic opponents in state legislatures to try to restrict access to abortion care and other sexual and reproductive health care services,” said Elliot V. Gardner, Sarasota Regional Organizer.

But our organization has rallied against those efforts. Since March, organizers have held 52 remote meetings and webinars, engaged 183 new volunteer prospects, hosted 252 individuals for a virtual event, and utilized 14 phone banks to reach 828 people.

Virtual community engagement has been a positive experience for many.

“I really liked having an online webinar,” one volunteer shared. “It felt as positive and warm a space as the face to face meetings do. The organizer did a really good job at keeping up the energy and facilitating discussion.”

Organizers have devised new ways to engage with our network of supporters. They’ve hosted Netflix watch parties, and conducted bystander intervention and allyship trainings. They have instituted actionable remote meetings such as phone banking, letter writing, and more to keep volunteers engaged. They have also provided remote actions through OutVote, an app where volunteers can contact friends and family about specific issues, encourage people to sign up for vote by mail, and fill out the census.
