Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is proud to provide two ways to greatly reduce the risk of HIV: PrEP and PEP.

PrEP

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and is daily medicine taken to prevent HIV.

What is PrEP?

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a daily pill (Truvada®) that prevents HIV for people at the greatest risk. When used correctly, it can reduce the risk of HIV through sex by more than 90%!

Is PrEP right for me?

PrEP may be right for you if you are HIV-negative and:

  • your partner is HIV-positive.
  • you have multiple partners, a partner with multiple partners, or a partner whose HIV status is unknown -and- you also: have anal sex without a condom, recently had a sexually transmitted disease (STD), don’t always use a condom for sex with people who inject drugs, or don’t always use a condom for sex with men who have sex with men.
  • you inject drugs and
    • share needles or equipment to inject drugs.
    • recently went to a drug treatment program.
    • are at risk for getting HIV from sex.
How do I get PrEP?

You can get PrEP at Planned Parenthood. Call 1-866-476-1321 to setup an appointment.

At your first appointment, we’ll determine if PrEP is right for you. If it is, and you test HIV-negative, then you’ll receive your prescription for Truvada. Follow-up appointments will occur every 3 months.

PEP

PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, and is taken after an exposure to HIV to prevent becoming infected.

What is PEP?

PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. It is an emergency medicine taken after an exposure to HIV to prevent becoming infected. PEP must be taken within 72 hours to be effective.

Interested in getting PEP? Call 1-866-476-1321 for an appointment, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Is PEP right for me?

PEP may be right for you if you are HIV-negative or your HIV status is unknown, and in the last 72 hours you:

  • think you may have been exposed to HIV during sex (for example, if the condom broke).
  • shared needles and works to prepare drugs.
  • were sexually assaulted.

PEP is only for emergency situations. Planned Parenthood can give you PEP, and so can most emergency rooms and primary health care providers. Planned Parenthood cannot prescribe PEP if you are pregnant, but other providers may be able to. Call 1-866-476-1321 for an appointment, or go to your nearest ER

How do I get PEP?

Time is of the essence when it comes to PEP. To get PEP at Planned Parenthood, call 1-866-476-1321. Or go to your local emergency department for PEP. You must take PEP within 72 hours to be effective.
