Restore flags at Main and Ellicott to recognize victims of sexual assault

Hannah Kujawski, education and outreach coordinator for Restore Sexual Assault Services, places a small flag in the ground outside the County Courthouse at Main Street and Ellicott Street, Batavia.

Kujawski and two other people from Restore planted 720 flags in the grass, one each to represent the 720 victims of sexual assault daily in the United States.

Restore, which provides a number of programs to assist the victims of sexual assault, is a service of Planned Parenthood.

RESTORE marking Sexual Assault Awareness Month

RESTORE Sexual Assault Services is widening its reach for the program’s fifth annual region-wide campaign for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Because of the substantial shift in national conversations about supporting survivors, more attention is focused on agencies serving those affected by sexual violence, including RESTORE, a program of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York.

Governor Cuomo Announces Expansion of Support Program for Incarcerated Victims of Sexual Abuse

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the state's domestic and sexual violence hotline is now available to incarcerated individuals throughout the state prison system, providing crisis counseling, as well as access to support, additional counseling and advocacy for individuals who are victims of sexual assault or harassment. With this implementation, New York has the most comprehensive victim support program available to survivors of sexual victimization in any state prison system in the nation. 

Jessica George, PREA Outreach and Education Specialist at RESTORE, said, "Though much work has been done to highlight the problem of sexual assault in our communities, the voices of incarcerated survivors of sexual assault have often been overlooked."

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul discusses women’s rights at UB

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul discussed the importance of gender equality and representation and mentioned UB women’s basketball head coach Felisha Legette-Jack during her brief visit to UB on Friday.

Reine Hauser, Director of Advancement for Erie and Niagara counties’ Planned Parenthood, said she is glad to see the governor protect women’s rights. “We're gratified with the governor's support of all these issues,” Hauser said.

Abortion conflict flares up in Batavia

Cuomo fires back at Trump's criticism of abortion law

Governor Andrew Cuomo is defending New York's new state abortion law after it was criticized by president trump during his State of the Union address.

"This is a decision with late-term abortion a woman makes under the guidance of a medical professional, so the medical professional will work with this woman in determining if this is possible," said Debora McDell-Hernandez, Planned Parenthood. "It's not something you decide on your own and walk in and say, 'I want a late-term abortion.'"
