Our Last Sale

After over 60 years, we have made the difficult decision that this October we will host our last Planned Parenthood Book Sale.

The decision to end the Planned Parenthood Book Sale was not done lightly.

When the city told us about an important infrastructure project, the 2nd Avenue Corridor Project, they made a fair offer for the warehouse to avoid the eminent domain process and the legal fight for both parties. In this increasingly hostile landscape, Planned Parenthood is often fighting legal battles to protect the right of Iowans to access essential health care and much needed sex education. We often have to make hard decisions about where to allocate resources to support our mission. We recognized that by coming to a mutual agreement with the city with a fair purchase price for the warehouse, we could continue supporting sex education in Iowa and preserve our legal resources for the fight to protect Iowans’ freedom to control their health, bodies, and future. We are thankful for the city’s open communication and partnership in that process.

After a thorough analysis, we found that continuing with the Book Sale in a new warehouse location would generate less revenue for Iowa education programs than if we were to put the money from the eminent domain sale into an endowed fund.

Planned Parenthood North Central States will continue supporting comprehensive, medically accurate, and inclusive sex education program in Iowa at the same level as was raised by the Book Sale through an endowment fund established by the sale of the warehouse.

Thank you

Thank you for being part of decades of memories, passion, and support. This sale was supported by hundreds of volunteers each year and we are deeply grateful for your support.

We hope you join us for other Iowa events and volunteer opportunities to support Planned Parenthood while finding connection and community.

Supporting Sex Education for Decades

The Planned Parenthood Book Sale, first started by a passionate group of active community members, has become a beloved tradition in Des Moines and in Iowa. Generations of people from across Iowa and across the country visited the sale to support sex education programs in our state. Each story we’ve heard from folks about their memories of the sale speaks to the legacy of the sale, but more importantly, the power of our community. As we prepare to close this chapter of Planned Parenthood’s story, we are reflecting on what has made this sale special over the years.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHEN WILL WE STOP TAKING DONATIONS AT THE WAREHOUSE?

We stopped taking donation at our warehouse on September 22, 2023 to prepare books to be moved to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the sale, and the building for evacuation before demolition.

WHAT CAN FOLKS DO IF THEY STILL WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT PLANNED PARENTHOOD?

We have volunteer opportunities to support outreach tables at community events, write letters to the editor, talk to patients in health centers about ways to get involved, and more. If you’d like to continue to volunteer with PPNCS in a different way, please reach out to [email protected]
