No-Cost Birth Control

Many insurance plans cover birth control with no copay or deductible. If you don't have insurance, you may qualify for no-cost birth control and other services through a Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) program called the Minnesota Family Planning Program (MFPP).

You may qualify for no-cost birth control if you:

  • Are a Minnesota resident.
  • Are a U.S. citizen, OR a non-citizen eligible to participate in federally funded programs.
Note: New immigration rules may apply to this program.
  • Are not pregnant.
  • Are not enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA), or another state-funded program.
  • Earn no more than the monthly income limits.

If you aren't eligible for no-cost services, you may still be eligible for reduced cost care depending on your income and the services you're looking for.

Eligible services include:

  • Birth control (the pill, patch, shot, ring, IUD, or implant)
  • Emergency contraception
  • Annual exam (pelvic and breast/chest exams, Pap test, blood pressure check/other vital signs)
  • Testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI/STD) identified during a birth control visit
  • Family planning education

Monthly income limits for the Minnesota Family Planning Program:

Family Size Income Limit
1 person (you) $2,430/month
2 persons (you + spouse or child) $3,287/month

3 persons (you + 2 family members)

$4,144/month
More than 3 persons Add $857/person

*Income limits valid July 1, 2023– June 30, 2024. If you make more than the income limits, you may still be eligible for reduced cost care. Our highly trained staff will help you determine if you qualify.
