Planned Parenthood of Illinois Responds to SCOTUS Decision to Hear Mifepristone Case
For Immediate Release: Dec. 13, 2023
CHICAGO - Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) responds to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision today to review the Texas case, Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine et al v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration et al. The plaintiffs have asked the court to order the FDA to rescind its approval of mifepristone from more than 20 years ago, in order to remove it from the market. The case could result in a devastating nationwide ban on mifepristone — even in states like Illinois where abortion is protected.
Mifepristone is one of the two pills typically used in a medication abortion up to 11 weeks of pregnancy. It is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy or manage a miscarriage. While SCOTUS reviews the case. access to mifepristone remains unchanged and available in Illinois.
Attributed to Jennifer Welch, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois:
“Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) continues to provide the full spectrum of medication abortion care as the legal battle over mifepristone proceeds through the Supreme Court. It’s outrageous that a medication which received FDA approval over 20 years ago and has been safely used by over five million people to end an early pregnancy should come under baseless and unscientific scrutiny. Abortion is safe and legal in Illinois and our doors remain open to provide medication abortion care to everyone regardless of their zip code.”
