Planned Parenthood of Illinois Reaction to Federal Judge's Dueling Decision on Medication Abortion
For Immediate Release: April 8, 2023
CHICAGO - Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) offers a reaction to the Texas and Washington state federal judges’s opposite rulings on Mifepristone, one of the two medications most commonly used in medication abortion. Because these decisions are made by federal judges, the rulings have consequences across the nation and even in states where abortion is enshrined by law like here in Illinois.

“Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) is furious that a Texas federal judge has issued a ruling that could revoke the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, one of two medications most commonly used in medication abortion. For now, approval of mifepristone remains protected because the judge also stayed the decision in order to give the federal government seven days to appeal.
In addition, a federal judge in Washington state issued another ruling that the FDA must keep medication abortion drugs available in over a dozen Democratic-led states including Illinois. PPIL is grateful for the ruling in Washington and applauds Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul for taking a stand to protect access to medication abortion.
The multiple and conflicting rulings can cause tremendous confusion and anxiety for our patients. To be clear, PPIL will continue to provide safe and legal medication abortion with or without mifepristone.
The Texas court decision is clearly a politically-motivated ruling considering that the FDA approved the drug more than 20 years ago, and it has since been used by more than five million people to safely end their pregnancies. Overturning Roe v. Wade, which was settled law for half of a century, was not enough for extreme anti-abortion activists. Ultra-conservative judges and Justices are set on further restricting equitable access to abortion, and we know they’re coming after birth control and other sexual and reproductive health care like gender affirming care. PPIL will continue to offer all abortion-care options available because everyone should have the ability to make a decision that is best for their bodies, their lives and their futures.”
