Planned Parenthood of Illinois Celebrates 37th Roe v. Wade Anniversary
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Chicago, IL – Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) commemorated the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, tonight at “The Future of Choice” at the Sofitel Hotel.
Nearly 700 pro-choice supporters attended the event, including legendary sex expert Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards.
With great humor and a direct manner, Dr. Ruth noted the importance of the anniversary, saying, “I am proud to celebrate this important milestone with Planned Parenthood of Illinois. Preventing unintended pregnancies is the most effective tool to decrease the number of abortions in this country, and for that to occur we need to vastly improve our approach to educating young people about their own sexual functioning. The work that Planned Parenthood has put into this effort is to be applauded.”
Dr. Ruth joined PPIL guests in honoring Alderman Vi Daley (D-43) with the Richard J. Phelan Profile in Courage Award for her successful effort in passing sponsoring the Bubble Zone Ordinance in Chicago City Council to protect patients, staff and volunteers from harassment and intimidation when entering a health care facility.
Although the event was a celebration, Cecile Richards took a serious tone in addressing the crowd, stressing the importance of protecting women’s reproductive rights in the current health care reform debate.
Almost to the day of the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the right to choice continues to be threatened by anti-choice hardliners. Planned Parenthood is dedicated to protecting this right and continuing to provide access to comprehensive reproductive health care and education.
All event proceeds directly benefit PPIL’s programs and services.
