Can I get health care without visiting a health center?

PPMI now offers two options to get select health care services from home:

How effective is birth control?

Effectiveness rates of various birth control methods vary greatly. To learn more about the various methods, click the links for each method listed on this birth control page. You can also take our "My Method" quiz to get recommendations on the best methods for your lifestyle.

Do I need an appointment or an exam to get a method of birth control?

If you want a hormonal method, you will need an appointment to get a prescription. In some cases, you may elect not to get a physical exam, but these exams are highly recommended!

What about condoms?

Male condoms are available at all of our health centers. They are either free or sold at a very low cost. Condoms are highly recommended to prevent many sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV. Always use a condom if you or your partner has other sex partners.

What about Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception (EC) must be taken as soon as possible to be most effective, but it can be used within five days of unprotected sex. You can pick up EC over the counter at any Planned Parenthood health center. We also offer other methods of emergency contraception. Search above for a health center near you or call 800-230-7526 to learn more.

Most pharmacies offer emergency contraception over the counter as well.

Who are PPMI's health care providers?

Most of the clinicians who do exams and counseling in our health centers are nurse practitioners or nurse midwives. Both of these are considered Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs). APNs are Registered Nurses (RNs) who return to school to gain additional knowledge in the area of women's health care. They have to take a certification exam and are then licensed by the State of Michigan as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife. Our APNs work in collaboration with our Medical Director who is a physician. If you want to see a particular APN or physician, just tell the appointment secretary.
