CI-100 Fails to Qualify for November Ballot!Planned Parenthood of Montana is pleased to announce that CI-100, the proposed ballot initiative that sought to ban all abortions in the state, has failed to gather enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot. We attribute the failure of CI-100, to a large-scale communications and volunteer effort on the part of the organization and a group of coalition partners. Planned Parenthood of Montana staff and volunteers worked tirelessly in communities across the state to educate voters on the dangerous implications of CI-100. “We made sure to let people know that CI-100 would undermine our state’s 40-year-old Constitutional right to privacy and could lead to bans on abortion, and some types of birth control,” said Stacy James, CEO. “We recognized very early in the process that we needed to strategize to defeat CI-100. We organized staff and volunteers right away so that they could talk to Montanan’s about the importance of protecting women’s health and safety, as well as the integrity of our state Constitution,” she said.
Planned Parenthood of Montana is the largest provider of family planning services in Montana, serving approximately 20,000 patients each year. “Because we are the largest women’s health organization in the state and we provide education and advocacy as well as direct health care, we felt a particular responsibility to take the lead in the effort to defeat CI-100,” said James. “Our goal was to protect access to healthcare and personal decision-making for our 20,000 patients, but we also recognized the importance of what we were doing to protect every Montana citizen’s right to privacy.”
Montanans for Safe and Healthy Families, the statewide ballot committee organized to defeat CI-100, included 25 state-based and national organizations committed to protecting women’s health. Planned Parenthood of Montana was one of the steering committee organizations that established a volunteer-led plan to educate voters and prevent enough signatures from being gathered to qualify CI-100 for the November ballot. Over 300 volunteers staffed 160 polling locations across the state on June 3rd, effectively educating voters and encouraging individuals to “decline to sign” the CI-100 petitions.
